It is still quite a bit away, but TYPO Berlin 2011 "Shift" – which takes place from May 19th to 21st – is picking up speed. Actually, if you take a look at their website you'll notice it's even flying! The new website has been online since late October, on November 1st, 2010, the first drawing of the TYPO Contest was held, and the TYPO Berlin 2010 DVD was launched Tuesday. And there's good news for the early birds: you can save up to €210,-if you register before December 31st.

To shift is to pick up speed, to push the envelope, to change your perspective. All three are useful strategies for TYPO 2011, in order to bring visual communications in line with the latest developments in technology.

Like Jürgen Siebert explained in our 20 Years of FontShop interview with him this summer:

We've chosen the theme Shift because this is exactly what happens in the communication and design industry at the moment – there is a major shift going on. However – although developments are dramatic and technology is speeding up – we are neither in the middle of a revolution, nor do we experience any major turning point. But things are definitely shifting – the emphasis, direction, or focus are changing. Look at the latest developments in Webfonts, social networks, mobility, publishing, … neither of these fields are experiencing radical steps, rather gradual transformations. One would better not underestimate the power of shifts: they come quiet, yet are powerful.

The typographical interpretation of Shift also plays a role in the concept of next year's conference. We're all using the Shift-Key on our keyboards hundreds of times a day, to enter a world of characters beyond the lower case letters. This additional meaning of the theme relates to the core competence of TYPO Berlin, which was, is, and will always be type and typography.

Early registration

As usual there is an "early bird" period for registration. If you are definitely going it is worth already purchasing your ticket, because you save up to €210,-as a professional, and even up to a staggering €500,-if you're a student. The conference fee entitles you to admission to the conference and evening events, simultaneous translation (German/English) in both main halls, refreshments during coffee breaks and two hot meals (Friday, Saturday), as well as admission to the concluding event on Saturday. There is one restriction – the number of tickets sold in all of the advance sale phases are limited; they are guaranteed when bought in advance, until contingent is sold out. If one advance sale phase is sold out, you may buy a ticket in the following registration phase, or be inscribed on a waiting list in case of cancellations. So do not procrastinate!

Win a free ticket!

Under the motto "Let your ideas take wing" TYPO Berlin is once more hosting a TYPO contest. At the top of their website you see curious objects floating through across the page. By designing your own futuristic object, or perhaps an entire swarm of them, and uploading the images to our sever, you could win fabulous prizes. Every week until TYPO (May 19–21, 2011), a winner will be drawn from each week's entries who will receive a TYPO ticket worth €680,-. The first drawing was held on November 1st, 2010. The last drawing will be on May 9, 2011.
